Volunteer

Join us at Garden for the Environment every Wednesday and Saturday, 10 am – 3 pm, to learn sustainable gardening techniques, build community, and support one of San Francisco’s most vibrant public teaching gardens.

The time, talent, and passion of our volunteers make our mission at Garden for the Environment possible.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Volunteer shifts are Wednesday and Saturday from 10am to 3pm.

Once everyone has arrived, we’ll do introductions and get to know each other. Then, GFE staff will provide an overview of the day’s garden tasks and provide instructions on what you’ll be working on.

We break for lunch at 12pm - feel free to bring lunch to sit and eat with staff and other volunteers.

See more volunteer shifts here.

WHAT TO BRING
🧤 Gardening gloves
🚰 Water bottle
🧢 Hat
☀️ Sunscreen
🧥 Warm Layers
🌧️ Rain Jacket
🍌 Snacks
🥪 Lunch (If you’re planning to stay the whole day)
😷 Face covering (optional)

WEATHER POLICY
If the weather forecast predicts a 70% chance or more of rain, we will cancel. If the forecast predicts under 70%, we will proceed, but ask that volunteers come only if you feel comfortable doing so and if you have the appropriate clothing for inclement weather.

Let’s garden together.

  • “I started volunteering at the GFE, learning how to compost and grow food and it wasn't long before I started my own home garden.”

    - Paul

  • “This is my
favorite community space in the city."

    - Kate

  • “When I first decided to volunteer, I didn’t know exactly what I was getting myself into. It turned out to be precisely what I needed at the time. "

    - Javin

See you soon!

Street parking is available, but it can be challenging on weekends. Public transportation is frequent and nearby!

The 6, 36, 43, and 44, bus lines and the N Judah all run within a few blocks of the garden. Forest Hill Station is also nearby and you can take the 43 or 44 directly from there to the garden.
