A great reference for information about rare crops. These two online (free!) books chronicle the Lost Crops of the Incas (1989) and Lost Crops of Africa (1996). A whole chapter on the lovely Tree Tomato! (Sent to us by a star volunteer, Brent)

Avocados in the Fog?

Are you thinking of growing Avocados in San Francisco? We are. In the Mission District they grow well, however the Inner Sunset will be a bit challenging. Interested? Check the California Rare Fruit Growers Avocado page, UC Davis Avocado page, and the Avocado Handbook. (p.s. We are considering a Mexicola or Stewart cultivar).

King Stropharia!!!

In May of this year we had a "Growing Culinary Mushrooms" workshop, led by local fungi guru Ken Litchfield. Today, August 22, we harvested 32 of theses delicious "Garden Giants" (an apt name, they are known as Garden Giant or King Stropharia)! Stropharia rugosoannulata.
